This remake of Clint Eastwood’s Oscar-winning epic may lack the austere, classical weight of the original, but it makes up for it in visual splendour. While Eastwood provided agonised, end-of-era minimalism as an ageing shooter forced to reload one final time to feed his children, the Japanese version leaps off into wild tangents and indulges in seeping wounds and spurting gore. There was an error posting your review. The film is remarkably zubtitles to Eastwood’s version. Weirdly, I found Sang-il Lee’s reverent remake gripping.

This unexpectedly left the Kitagawa clan in shambles, with their top hitman Ikegmai wounded and Muto’s wife in prison. Taken in its own context, it’s a solid, if unremarkable samurai picture.

Even more terrifying, Munny finds himself regressing into the cold-blooded killer he once was. It’s a yurusarezari, perhaps, but it’s nicely made, beautifully acted and well worth seeking out.
